Traveling to
Medellin?
This week in
Medellin!
When I first started coming to Medellin on Business, I would only be here for a day or two and never really had a chance to look around and see what this fair city was all about.
About 4 years ago, I decided to visit Medellin and spend 10 days here and a week in Cartagena (which I had visited many times for 10 days to 2 weeks at a time).
After a week in Medellin, I cancelled my Cartagena reservations and changed my airline flights. I was enjoying Medellin so much, I didn't want to leave.
About 4 years ago, I kind of semi retired and moved to Brazil. It was a great lifestyle for almost 2 years but the constant hassles of being mugged and the daily uncertainty of the Brazilian Real began to wear on me. (since leaving, the US Dollar has lost about 60% of its buying power against the Real...good move on my part).
I decided to give Medellin a really good test run for three months in Oct to Dec. of 2005. I actually moved in with a Colombian family and spent 3 months living like a Paisa. It was the experience of a lifetime and I knew someday, Medellin would become my home.
I had a 1 year contract to complete to help a friend with his business but all the while, was making plans to move here and make it my home.
Now, I am an internet searcher by habit. I research things to death and make sure I have facts, figures and local knowledge of a place I am going to before I ever go there. I discovered something very interesting about Medellin. There was not a lot of CURRENT infomation; not many English web sites and what there was, generally only covered one or two topics.
I did a Go Daddy search and was surprised to find the URL www.medellintravelguide.com was available. Any city travel guide URL is a valuable piece of property. I started doing searches on other specific Medellin_________ topics and before I knew it, owned a number of very impressive URLs.
Now, even though I am a great Internet researcher, even have some expertise in Search Engine Optimization and managed several web sites for people, I had never built one. I also knew I did not want to have to learn HTML coding but I did want to be able to maintain my own site, make changes, additions, corrections and deletions when I wanted to and not have to keep someone on a payroll to do it. I wanted to control my own destiny.
I just knew there had to be an easy web site development tool that even I could use to build and maintain my site.
I searched. I went on public forums. I passed through the marketing hype of many sites that said they were drag and drop only to find out they were offering MS FrontPage as their development tool. I'd just as soon learn HTML coding.
Then one day, I stumbled across a company called Blue Voda They had a pretty interesting video introduction that caught my eye. I perused some of their video tutorials and even read some of their public forum comments. The more I looked, the more intrigued I became. There was (as always) a catch. Even thought they offered their software for free, you had to host with them to use their web development software.
As I looked at their Hosting package and benchmarked it against other offers, I quickly realized, they were offering the biggest bang for the least bucks I could find. 6GB of storage, 6GB of monthly bandwidth, no limit on the number of domain or subdomain's, no limit on....well, just about anything!
So I signed up, downloaded the software, watched the tutorials, "meticulously", and began building a site. I had a rudimentary site completed the first day. About like a first graders drawing of a house. Anybody could tell what it was but for Medellin Travel Guide, I wanted something a little better.
I am the type of person that does not have an artistic bone in my body. I can not even draw a straight line with a ruler. So, I sought out some help from one of the Blue Voda site developers. A lady with a keen eye and knowledge of building web sites. She had a workable template to me in a day. With one template, I was going to be able to build all my pages like cookie cutters.
When I got to the point of needing some forms (contact, feedback, forum and others) I just had her do them. Oh, I probably could have spent hours researching how to do it but she did them for me in a couple of days. My sanity is certainly worth more than the relatively small amount I have paid her to do them for me. They are also reusable on other sites I will be building.
Medellin Travel Guide started becoming something of a hairy beast. It just kept growing legs, more pages, more links, more, well,.....everything! What started as a plan for about 30-45 pages quickly grew to well over 125. Pretty ambitious for a first web site. Everyone kept telling me I was crazy.
Well, maybe crazy like a fox...he he!
I self imposed a December 1st publication date. I was going to publish no matter how much was finished and just keep frequently updating as I completed pages under construction. I published on Dec 2nd! I also self imposed about 20 to 25 new pages that had not been part of the original plan. The CultureGram is a good example.
I just kept finding things I wanted to add, much to the demise of some pages I should have been completing. Such is the cross to bear of a life long sufferer of ADD who had it when they didn't even know what it was, much less knew how to treat it. An ADD sufferer is easily distracted but I have learned to cope with it throughout my life.
So, if you are thinking about building a web site for your business, or would even like to build a small, simple website for your family or friends but do not know how to build a web site, you might want to check out Blue Voda. You can literally have a site built and published in less than a day (if you keep it small and simple). If a semi retired guy like me can do it, you certainly can.
I now have a new passion in life and have Blue Voda to thank for it. Bringing the merits of this beautiful city to the world in English, all on one easy to navigate location. Mark my words, Medellin Colombia will be a topic of discussion on many peoples lips in the near future. Not because of it's past history of violence and drug cartels. But because of it's climate, quality of life, low cost medical and dental services (medical tourism is becoming very big here), excellent shopping malls, rising property values, the numbers of major corporations opening divisions here, quality of the local universities and educational system, ease of moving about the city via local transportation and much, much more.
Just look at the photos on the site and make your own judgment.
The City of Eternal Spring, Medellin Colombia
Yes. I am giving Blue Voda a plug only because they deserve it so much!
