Telefonica, part of the Empresas Publicas Medellin (EPM), the local utility company responsible for Telecommunications, Electricity, Water and Sewer, was a major contributor to the early urbanization efforts in the city.
Today, Medellin boasts one of the most modern telecommunications systems in the country and one of the highest subscription rates per 100 inhabitants. Modern satellite communications has brought high speed internet into Medellin which has the most internet connections of any city in Colombia. Fiber rings encircle the city providing high speed service to businesses and residents alike.
Several local cable providers like Une bundle local telephone service in their cable and internet service offerings. EPM does their billing.
Tel-Mex has recently opened operations in Medellin and are fiercely competing for customers.
