Medellin Grocery
Whether you just want to stock in some snacks or buy major provisions, you will find grocery shopping in Medellin a pleasure but not necessarily inexpensive. The major grocery chains are Exito, Pamona, Carulla and Carrefour. Exito S.A actually owns Pomona, Exito, Ley and Carulla.. Pamona is more like a traditional supermarket focusing mostly on food products while the other three are more like Wal Mart Supercenters and carry food, clothing, appliances and more. All have multiple ATM machines supporting different banks and networks. All accept major credit cards (you will need a copy of your passport to use them). Pricing is about the same in all of them although the locals swear Pamona is more expensive. They all have a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, fresh (and frozen) meats and seafood. Unlike US supermarkets, there is usually an employee in every aisle to assist you or a brand representative handing out samples. They will bag your groceries and load your purchases into a taxi or if you live close will actually push your cart home for you.
World class hypermarkets, present in Colombia since the late 90’s, have been continuously expanding. Colombia has chains such as Carrefour, a joint venture among France (65 percent), Spain (10 percent), and Colombia (25 percent). Carrefour has 17 stores and plans to open 3 new ones during 2010 to increase its 10 percent market share in the hypermarket/supermarket arena. Makro, with 7 stores is an alliance between Colombia and Holland (57 percent). It has refocused its activities toward institutional wholesaling and plans to open 13 additional stores between 2003 and 2010. Alkosto is a six store chain wholly owned by Colombian stockholders that holds 9 percent share of the hypermarket supermarket sales.
Large supermarket chains are increasing in number and increasing in sales volume and value. There are 6 main supermarket chains that own more than 450 stores: Exito S.A. the major player with 39 percent share of the hypermarket/supermarket market - has 65 stores and 33 percent investment from a French Casino. Carulla is owned by Exito with 19 percent market share and 165 stores. New Bridge from the U.S. owns 28 percent of the stock. The Olimpica Group is 100 percent Colombian and has 135 stores. Cafam has 50 stores and Colsubsidio 20, both are 100 percent Colombian privately subsidized stores. Cacharreria la 14, regional chain with 9 stores in the Cauca State.
Do not expect to see major cost savings on food in Colombia. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good buys. Everything else can be comparatively expensive.
